7. Geothermal energy (Heat from the subsurface)

Where does the heat come from that causes even rocks to melt deep underground? How could it be used? And where does surface-near ground heat gets its energy from?
Deep and surface-near geothermal energies are indeed very different. But they have one thing in common: It depends on the geological nature of the ground where they can be used safely and profitably.
