8. Atomic energy (No playing outside!)
The drop of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 made the entire world see the enormous energy released from nuclear fission. Three decades later, civil use of nuclear energy promised practically unlimited power. Trusting that this technology can be safely and securely controlled, many countries counted on atomic power.
An accident far away has consequences
In 1986 an atomic reactor exploded far away in the Soviet Union. Even 1600 km (1000 miles) away in the Black Forest, Chernobyl’s catastrophe had an effect… But what does a US president have to do with the developments in the introspective Schönau, following the Chernobyl event?
